Taking It to the Next Step Along With TPACK

Posted on 07:33 by Unknown

The reading teacher in me has been quiet and is ready to come back out ….
While reading is a great way to help a child grow in vocabulary and imagination, it is what you DO with what is read that really encourages and supports critical and creative thinking skills!
Technology can be used in many ways to support and encourage the many things that can be done with reading ....
Here are a few ideas of activities that can be used to support higher order thinking skills:Make a collage which might be found hanging in the bedroom of one of the characters and write a brief explanation of each item selected.
  • Write diary entries that one of the characters might have written during the course of the story.
  • Write a poem or a song that expresses one or more of the characters’ feelings.
  • Create a piece of original artwork that interprets one of the themes in the book.
  • Write and perform an original skit based on the book.
  • Write letters that two of the characters might have written to one another about what was happening in their lives.
  • Create an original board game based on the book.
  • Write and record an original news broadcast about the events in the book.
  • Draw a timeline of the book, complete with illustrations and commentaries about each event on the timeline.
  • Create a cause-and-effect continuum of how and why the main character changes as a result of the events and situations that occur.
Did you notice the differentiation embedded in these activities?
Children would be able to utilize their strengths to demonstrate their learning …
Choice could even be involved if you gave an assignment similar to this one:
  • Choose a book (online or from the bookcase)
  • Read the story
  • Select and complete the activity that most appeals to you and/or best fits the story you read
  • Explain why you chose the activity and how you completed it
With the added explanation part, you are jumping into that metacognition area … asking children to really think about their thinking!
That is taking it to the next step!
You can look at the WSFCS TPACK Activity Guides to see possible technology tools that can be used for activities like this!

Click on a area and then you can find possible activities in the table along with suggested resources to use!

Using Timelines Across Content Areas

Posted on 06:01 by Unknown
As a former social studies teacher, I had a tendency to primarily use timelines to sequence major events we were studying in class. I've always wanted to use timelines across different subjects areas but, often found myself lacking time and resources to find other uses for them in the classroom.

I've been reading Steve Johnson's, Digital Tools for Teaching, and have been highly impressed with his style and all the great resources he shares with his readers. I turned to Steve's book and other classroom teachers searching for ideas on how timelines can be used across content areas. Here are some ideas that were shared...

Science teachers can have students...
- create a timeline of the deadliest instances of different types of extreme weather (Ex: all Category Five hurricanes, tsunamis, etc. over the last 50 years)
- review the cycle of a butterfly
- chart out a scientific discovery (Ex: development of solar energy, stem cell research, etc.)

Social Studies teachers can have students...
- track current events as they occur overtime (Ex: Arab uprisings)
- map the journey of a major explorer in a timeline
- track and invention and the impact it has/had on society

English/Language Arts teachers can have students...
- sequence the main events of a novel
- identify the emotions of a protagonist
- map out the writing process
- conduct an author study and share their findings in a timeline format

Math teachers can have students...
- compare and order units of length from smallest to largest
- review the order of operations
- explore timelines they are interested in and analyze them mathematically(What are the average number of days between each event? What percent/fraction of events includes a picture? If you were 34 years old when the second timeline event occurred, how old would you be by the last event?)
- create a timeline to solve word problems (see example below)

What about interactive timelines?
There are several popular timeline creators students can use to create their timelines. One popular timeline creator is Timetoast. In Steve Johnson's Teacher Tech Videos, you'll find great video tutorials on timeline creators and Timetoast. Whether you are a technology newbie or an advanced user, his Teacher Tech Videos provide tips that anyone can use and apply. For more great resources and ideas from Steve, check out his website and blog.

Tiki-Toki Makes Timelines Fun Again

Posted on 11:56 by Unknown
Thanks to Tiki-Toki, this is the first time in a long time I've been excited about timelines. I first came across Tiki-Toki in a Simple K12 webinar a few weeks ago. Immediately I was drawn to the bright colors, easy to read pop up panels (no more squinting to read tiny windows), and the user friendly editing tools. Tiki-Toki offers a free basic account that allows you to add videos and images with a simple mouse click. In addition, you can change the background picture of your timeline to match your topic. Since they integrated Flickr, YouTube, and Vimeo, finding content to add to your timeline is simple. While creating your masterpiece, you can share it with others, making collaborating easier.

Unfortunately, not all things are perfect when dealing with free web based tools. With the free basic account, you are limited to one timeline and you cannot embed it into a website. However, upgraded plans start out at $5.00/month. I did email Tiki-Toki's team and voiced my concerns about this. Offering a free educator account would be ideal and I'll be happy to share their response once I hear back from them.
